The design was finalized in 1964 and various test rigs were built between 19. Prior to the 1965 decision to design an entirely new tank, some technologies which would later be used in the STB-1 (first prototype) were already in development independently in Japan. The design included a rotating cupola for the commander, and a new autoloader for the main gun. Features from several designs were incorporated, including the controllable suspension of the US-German MBT-70 project, the hull of the Leopard 1, and a similar 105mm gun. The JGSDF began studies on new tank designs with Mitsubishi in 1962, after the Type 61 had been shown to be outmatched by new Soviet tanks such as the T-62. Both the Type 74 and Type 90 are supplemented and will be eventually replaced by the new-generation Type 10 tank. The design did not enter widespread use until 1980, by which point other Western forces had introduced more capable designs. Like these designs, it mounts the Royal Ordnance L7 rifled 105 mm gun. It was based on the best features of a number of contemporary designs, placing it in the same class as the US M60 Patton or German Leopard 1. It was built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries as a supplement to the earlier Type 61. The Type 74 ( 74式戦車, nana-yon-shiki-sensha) is a main battle tank (MBT) of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF). This tank is fantastic even at stock, it feels smooth, the stabelizer is just a joy, the gun is accurate and powerfull enough for APDS(got used to with the brits), the tank is mobile and has enough hp to climb all kind of hills and on top of that you got that incredibly usefull suspension to explore all kinds of new spots with. This article needs additional citations for verification. You disagree with yourself: Only usefull after HEATFS, you should use Kinetic.Īnd after i played my first 10 matches or so with it, i have a hard time to believe that we talk about the same tank. However, at this BR and with such optics (actually good ones in the STB) it's quite necessary to use kinetic rounds.
I must agree that the STB-1 becomes useful only after HEATFS are researched. I have a lot of experience with these vehicles, but it is my opinion that the 8.7 lineup shines better than a 8.3 (i do have a 8.3 lineup setup for tanking with friends in other nations like US) and in these cases you are limited to STB which can be painful, but it still works if you play smartly. Originally posted by Kikusaku:At 7.7 the STB works fine, it could go to 8.0 but Gaijin nerfed the reload speed to be really slow compared to other L7 105's, that's it major drawback. The rounds on the Type 74, (type 93 apfsds) is acceptable all the way to 10.3, dont discount its firepower, you may have a inferior machine in uptiers, but your gun still works just fine I have Type 74, STB (backup) 2 planes, Type 89 (which has a bugged transmission you will find out). The Type 74 has a much faster rate if fire, a better stabilizer, better modeled turret (still not correct) better armor quality RHA vs CHA, and APFSDS Use the STB to get a feel how the type 74 drives, and help research it, but it has nothing to really back it up at 7.7 (I've heard they increased this price drastically recently) The armor dont count on it, the turret is poorly modeled so even a shot that should bounce usually goes through anyway.ĪPDS doesn't work that great, but the HEATFS does work pretty well. At 7.7 the STB works fine, it could go to 8.0 but Gaijin nerfed the reload speed to be really slow compared to other L7 105's, that's it major drawback.
